Kavala – Philippi

Day 9 – Kavala – Philippi

Kavala, Philippi

Sunday, November 2, 2014

This morning is Sunday and we are docked at Kavala, the modern city of Neapolis, not far away is the ancient city of Philippi. Neapolis is the first place where Paul started to preach in Europe. We passed the monestary of St. Silas. We toured the excavations of the Roman city of Philippi. The best preserved is the theater. Other remains are Byzantine and date to the fifth and sixth centuries. A short distance away was the Lydia River wher Paul baptized Lydia the seller of purple, Acts 16. There is modern church called the Baptistery of Lydiaat this site. We had a church service which was very meaningful. We stayed in the downtown for a little shopping.
